BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- The Cineclub el cine que ya tenías que haber visto (cinema that you should have seen) continues from December 7th with a series of French movies of the late ’50s, dubbed the Nouvelle vague.

Nouvelle vague (New wave) is the name given by critics to the new group of French film-makers appeared in the late 1950. The new directors have responded to the structures imposed on French cinema at the time, and therefore demanded not only greater freedom of expression but also more freedom in the field of film production.

This name appeared so many critics and writers of the magazine Cahiers du Cinema founded in 1951 by Andre Bazin, decide to make a foray into directing films in the late fifties, after screenwriters in previous years.

This is the case of François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer or Claude Chabrol and the precursor Jean Pierre Melville.

Technical innovations and the low costs of instruments necessary for making movies have contributed to the emergence of this trend. Thanks to the lightweight cameras and 8mm. and 16mm, and the new more sensitive emulsions, it was possible to run without artificial light, camera on shoulder and in natural environments.

French businessmen want to make the Dominican Republic the gateway to the investment in the Caribbean

BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- The Movement of French Enterprises (MEDEF) has expressed its interests to transform the Dominican Republic in the gateway to the second wave of French investments in the country and the rest of the Caribbean in the areas of tourism, energy, rail transportation, technology, perfume and telecommunications.

Concerning the investment of French people overseas, the lunch attended by the President Leonel Fernández enabled him to explain the investment facilities in the Dominican Republic, the benefits of beach, mountain, extreme water sports tourism, as well as sectors of renewable energy, telecommunications, medical industry and trade.

Mr. Fernández said that despite the negative consequences of the global economic crisis, the Dominican Republic had maintained its economic growth, which gave confidence to foreign contractors who continue to invest in the country.

He assured that the country offered the best opportunities for French investment, which is already present in the province of Samaná, Las Terrenas in particular, where are installed hotels and restaurants : more than 80% are managed by French.

The Dominican President said that after his first official visit to France in 1998, companies had settled in the Dominican Republic and doing very well today, as is the case of Alstom, Carrefour and Orange.

We are sure that this new encounter may contribute to the alliance between our two countries and facilitate the establishment of new commercial projects in order to continue to strengthen the successes we have achieved in recent years, said Leonel Fernández.

The Head of the Dominican state has added: The crisis that hit us in the second half of 2008 warned us concerning the importance of preparing ourselves to face difficult times and problems.

After listening to the Dominican President, French businessmen have expressed interests in sectors of energy, tourism, transportation, technology, construction and telecommunications.

In this sense, the President of Orange and the Dominican French Chamber of Commerce, Jean Marc Harion, thanked President Fernández for his first official visit, through which his company will soon celebrate its 10 years of settlement in the country.

Regarding the government’s desire to build two rail lines, the companies Alstom Transport, Alstom International Maintenance Company, Sofratesa, Thales International, and TSO have expressed their interest in the project.

BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- The contest Miss Las Terrenas 2009, ended this Saturday December 05th, with the coronation of Solanyi Herrera Burgos, who became the new beauty queen of the village.

The young girl, 18 years old, was elected in the category Miss, in which were also elected five finalists: Jessica María Vincendon Nolasco, 17 years old, Marie Rosalie Morilla Codero, 15 years old, Estefani Van den Akker Paulino, 17 years old, Grace Matilde Andersón Hernández, 14 years old, and Aniris Casimiro, 14 years old.

In the Teen category, Dianyi Abreu, 10 years old, won the contest. She said before:

I like to be Miss Teen because I would like to win and show everybody what I’ve learn, and I want to win to represent my village, here and in other countries.

In the Mini category, all the participants won.

Antonia Jean, director of the models school La Elegancia, and organizer of the event, explained that the five finalists will participate with the winners to national contests.

BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- The construction works of the Tourist Atlantic Boulevard continue, in order to stimulate the development of the Samaná Peninsula.

Since 6 months, the workers are constructing the El CateyLas Terrenas road, which should be over in august 2011.

This road will join up Las Terrenas to El Catey in 15 minutes, and to the entrance of the Santo Domingo highway in 25 minutes.

Besides, it will enable the travelers to go from Las Terrenas to Santo Domingo in 2h30.

Two tolls will be placed on this road, which is a great work for the integral development of the Samaná Peninsula.

BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- The month of December will be very active for the El Catey International Airport of Samaná, with the arrival of many international flights.

No fewer than ten companies serve the El Catey Airport throughout the month of December, which should significantly increase the number of tourists who visit the Samaná Peninsula for the end of the year.

XL Airways and Air Mediterranée make the connection with France, while many airlines including Air Canada, Skyservice, CanJet and Air Transat, offer several flights from Canada.

The flow of German tourists is provided by the airline Condor, which offers a flight every Tuesday from Frankfurt.

Blue Panorama Airlines from Milan, Italy, also will land in El Catey in December, as White Airlines, which offers a flight every Tuesday from Lisbon.

The airline TUIFLY.com will assure for its part the connection with Finland, Norway and Denmark.

BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- Fans of local handicrafts will be pleased to know that the Craft Market opened this week in Las Terrenas.

For several months, organizers worked with the assistance of the Foundation Azúcar to bring together various local artisans, in order to create that market, which undoubtedly represents a new attractive point for Las Terrenas.

Both the villagers and tourists will enjoy the diversity of Samaná craft, with art work of a dozen artists from across the province.

The craft market will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 6:30 pm in the Restaurant Caña de Azucar (The Sugar Cane) on the road to Portillo.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 06.00 pm.

The creation of this new plaza is meant to honor the source of the Paseo, which after many months of inactivity is working and brings a touch of freshness and magic to the place.

He was christened with the name of Jean de la Fontaine, poet, fabulist, moralist, playwright, librettist and seventeenth-century French novelist.

It is the renowned author of the famous fables, The cicada and the ant, The wolf and the lamb, The crow and the fox, among others.

BREAKING NEWS: Las Terrenas.- Thanks to José Acevedo, deputy for the Samaná Peninsula and to its intervention to the Interior and Police Ministry of Dominican Republic this week with establishments’ owners of Las Terrenas, the agreement signed on August 8th, 2008 was actualized and the closing hours maintained at 04.00 am every day…

On Friday at 10:00 am, a meeting was organized by Sergio Blanch and Franck Buisson, two motivators of the nights of Las Terrenas and respective owners of establishments Gaïa Club and Indiana Café.

This meeting was a continuation of its movement to the capital, supported by the presence of the LDP MP ACEVEDO Jose Samana, in order to find the Interior and Police authorities, subject to sign an agreement extending the closing time of bars, clubs and restaurants of Las Terrenas.

This meeting in Santo Domingo was the promise of the Assistant Secretaries of Interior and Police, Pantaleon Professor Maria Arias, Antonio PICEL GOAT (Tonite) and Henry CASTILIAN to participate in this meeting to reach an agreement.

This ones initially heard the explanations of those responsible for night establishments pitied this punishment which had already lasted too long in this tourist town that is well known and Las Terrenas.

On board of this crisis, dismissed the favors granted to Sosua and Cabarete, Las Terrenas lived an excruciating social discomfort for all employees and managers of restaurants, bars and nightclubs since 2 years now.

Citing the difference in timing of life of Europeans who live here but mostly the natural desire of tourists and holidaymakers wanting to party till late at night, high-quality tourist service offered in Las Terrenas saw his clientele decrease each again only due to the fact that curfew.

However, if the argument advanced by the authorities in the establishment of this decree two years ago was to reduce crime, all the local players were able to observe that on the contrary, the absence of movement at night, especially the Police and of Politur, left the field open to thieves and thefts.

In fact, Las Terrenas has absolutely no resemblance to a dangerous neighborhood, but is more like a big family town where everyone knows everyone else. A big, beautiful town that sells a unique tourism and not in another part of the Dominican Republic, with a permanent party and the good humor of the Dominicans.

At the end of all these explanations, the Secretaries of Interior and Police in turn took the floor to explain the situation regarding a possible extension of the closing times.

Safety First. In this condition, Professor Pantaleon MARIA ARIAS explained that it would strengthen to ensure the safety of citizens and tourists.

Also the Public Health services and firefighters will visit each establishment to verify the requirements of the rules must be applied in these shops.

Then, under pressure from local representatives to obtain an agreement from today, Professor Pantaleon MARIA ARIAS requested a committee be created immediately for those representatives with the aim of signing a formal agreement, which was done.

Negotiations continued over lunch and afternoon while writing this agreement.
