A hydrologist warns about problems affecting Cosón river

Cosón riverSoil erosion could cause flooding

The watersheds of the rivers Cosón and San Juan, located in the Samaná province, are being degraded by deforestation, livestock, erosion, pollution and inappropriate crops, warned the hydrologist José Alarcón.

He said it is worrying that such important areas were located on private land and that the owners can sell to large tourism projects at any time.

According to the specialist, this situation can be observed from the road that reaches Las Terrenas: much of the area is covered by pasture-land, and only few small trees.

Alarcón explained that this type of vegetation favors soil erosion and therefore major flooding.

He considered that public and / or private sectors must develop programs to promote reforestation and to inform the owners of these lands about the importance of this areas, in order to protect water-production.

Alarcon noted that these problems were already highlighted by the Environmental Protection Program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
