UMP candidate to become deputy of Latin America and the CaribbeanThe candidate for the French Party Union for a Popular Movement
, for the second district of the French from Latin America and the Caribbean, Pascal Drouhaud, was presented on Saturday morning at the Paco Cabana restaurant in Las Terrenas. He was accompanied during the meeting by Mr. Richard Beauvais, delegate of the UMP party in the Dominican Republic.
The French politician and businessman explained his goal was to answer the demand for education, social security, taxation, retirement, and to offer a supportive presence to the 150 000 French people that live in 33 countries in Latin America and Caribbean.
In total, 5000 French are registered on electoral lists in the Dominican Republic, of which 3000 live in Las Terrenas.
This is the first time that French citizens living abroad will vote during the legislative elections and also the first time that French voters in Latin America and the Caribbean will elect a representative to defend their interests.
The legislative elections in France will be in June 2012, when 577 deputies elected to form the assembly.
The majority of French people living in the country are in Santo Domingo, Las Terrenas, Puerto Plata, La Romana, Higuey and Santiago, adding that nearly 30% of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic is in France.
