Samaná Bay is preparing to welcome humpback whales

Humpback whalesA great attraction for Las Terrenas

Starting Sunday Dominicans and foreigners will be able to observe the humpback whales which visit the Atlantic coast every year.

The whale watching season lasts until March and draws around 30,000 foreign and Dominican tourists who eagerly take to boats and observation spots to watch the cetaceans, which come from the waters off Iceland, Greenland, Canada, to the Caribbean region.

The humpback whale season means more income for northeastern Samaná and Hato Mayor provinces, including Las Terrenas, where many excursions are sold.

Samaná Bay’s Humpback Whales Sanctuary is located in the country’s Northeast, where around 3,000 of the marine mammals mate and calve along the Atlantic coast, between December and April.
